Newborn kittens have a high capacity to utilise milk due to high intestinal lactase activity. The main energy sources in feline milk are lactose and fat. However, the ability to digest lactose decreases as a kitten grows. This is because the intestinal enzyme activity that digest lactose decreases as the animal matures. Contrary to popular belief, milk is unnecessary in a cat’s diet and can actually lead to gastrointestinal upsets such as diarrhoea.
